If you belonged to this world, then the world would love you as its own. But I chose you from this world, and you do not belong to it; that is why the world hates you. ~John 15:19
"You are not of this world but you are in this world."
There's something beautiful about Bible verses that is deeper than any quote ever said.
We live in a society that sometimes pressures us to look at ourselves differently. Before we realize it, we think we cannot be different or true to ourselves. Society has picked up mirrors for us and sometimes shows us distorted reflections. What it forgets to tell you is to pick up your mirror and see your reflection for what it is. We forget to remind ourselves that we are bigger than those mirrors and the light that reflects back through them.
Salt must not lose its taste and light must not be hidden because it ceases to have fullness. It becomes something else. In the same way, we must not lose ourselves and naturally be like light and salt in their fullness. We must guard ourselves against conforming to society and prevailing cultures that have been picked and chosen. We are different and separate from societal expectations.
We are responsible and need to ask some hard questions. 'Why do I need to conform to this?' 'Is it sitting right with justice and all that is good?' Instead of isolating and brooding over the problems plaguing our society, we need to address them together and inspire change. Every person is a mirror and a reflection of society. Think of the last time you wanted to speak up but found yourself choking on your words. Not because you were embarrassed to say anything but because you felt like you did not have to do anything about it even if it bothered you. I've been a culprit of this scenario more than once, and it gets to the point that we get so numb to the feeling. Getting accustomed to the numbing feeling is the start of the problem. We feel like no one else is bothered and there is nothing we can do to ruffle society's filthy feathers. That's where we go wrong. We forget we are influential. I forget I am influential
In both good and bad behavior, we are influential in some way. If we see children acting a certain way, it is because they passionately learned from adults and society. The standard has been set and so, sometimes people follow without much thought and quickly curse society for how it is. We look outward for the blame rather than inward... Be like salt and light. Do not lose yourself in the struggle because charity begins at home.
Nothing but cocoa love,
Sam 🌻
